Gennady Mishuris is Professor of Mathematical Modelling at the Department of Mathematics of Aberystwyth University (Wales, UK). Professor Mishuris graduated from Department of Mathematics and Mechanics of Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg) State University with MSc degree in applied mathematics with the distinction (red diploma) in 1982, where 3 years later he was awarded his Ph.D. degree. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, He moved to Poland where he defended his DSc (Doctor of Science) degree in mechanics by Cracow University of Technology in 1999 and was a recipient of the Prise of Polish Ministry of Education for his achievements. In 2000 Professor Mishuris was awarded by Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship to stay at University of Erlangen-Nuremberg University. In 2004 he did research in London South bank University (UK) supported by Leverhulme Visiting Fellowship, while in 2005-2007 he stayed in University of Liverpool with Marie Curie Fellowship. Professor Mishuris is a holder the Wolfson Research Merit Award by Royal Society. In 2014, he was elected a Fellow of Welsh Academy of Sciences.

Professor John Chapman is Professor of Applied Mathematics in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Keele. His research interests are wave theory, fluid mechanics, elastic waves and vibrations, and mathematical methods and approximations of all types. He was a Fellow of Christ’s College, Cambridge, and has written a text-book ‘High Speed Flow’, published by Cambridge University Press. Currently Professor Chapman is an editor of Proceedings of the Royal Society A (Mathematical, Physical and Engineering Sciences), in which capacity he is one of the two editors for Review Articles. An equation is named after him, the Chapman–Proctor equation, now in a fluid dynamics textbook (Rieutord 2015).

The scattering of a harmonic vorticity wave by an infinite, two-dimensional cascade of thin blades in subsonic mean flow is studied analytically, as a model problem of relevance to the question of sound generation by modern aeroengines. In this talk, I aim to extend the previous study by Koch, who considers only the scattered radiation, by deriving expressions for the detailed unsteady lift distribution on the blades. In an earlier paper, I have calculated this lift distribution in the asymptotic limit of large reduced frequency, but here that analysis is generalised to the case of arbitrary reduced frequency. This is achieved by the solution of two scattering problems using the Wiener-Hopf technique, one in the leading-edge region of the cascade and one in the trailing-edge region, in terms of an infinite sequence of duct-mode coefficients, and these unknowns are then determined by matching the two solutions together inside the cascade.
